100.9 FM came to the Lebanon and Springfield airwaves in 1979 with 3,000
watts and an easy listening format. The frequency was owned by six
Elizabethtown businessmen with the Lebanon-Springfield Broadcasting
Company. It was one of two stations licensed to serve Marion and
Washington counties, the other being AM 1590 WLBN; which hit the air in
1953.
Since the station was licensed to serve Lebanon
and Springfield, Kentucky, General Manager the late J.T. Whitlock came up
with an idea for the call letters: L-standing for Lebanon, S-for
Springfield and K-standing for Kentucky. The station would later increase
to 10,000 watts and change to a country format.
In 1985, WLSK was sold to J.T. Whitlock, Cherry
Gibson and J.B. Crawley. In 1997 Commonwealth Broadcasting bought the
station. The format was changed again to Lite-Rock 100.9 WLSK and was very
well received by the tri-county area. In February of 2001 the format
changed to Classic Hits and was well received.
To date WLSK- FM is still attracting more and
more listeners in central Kentucky as the station recently went to 25,000
watts and is now MIKE 100.9. What is Mike 100.9? The best hits
from the 80's, 90's and whatever we want to play next! |
